I’m absolutely devastated. I can’t believe it. Another legend, the man I associate with the name Willy Wonka, is no longer with us. Gene Wilder died on Sunday at the age of 83.
Not only will he ALWAYS be Willy Wonka to me, but his roles in Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein (Wilder co-wrote this), The Producers, Blazing Saddles & a ton of hilarious movies with Richard Pryor were a staple of my childhood & teenage years. Comedy Gold!
He’d been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for about three years & kept that difficult battle within his family. Why? Because he didn’t want kids to stop getting excited and smile when they saw him and would call out “Hey, it’s Willy Wonka” when he’d be walking down the street. What a class act!
Now, he rests in the land of pure imagination.
I think this weekend calls for a Gene Wilder movie marathon. Who’s with me?
