You may not realize this, but the guys from Metallica are pretty well-read.
The band has referenced plenty of famous books in their songs over the years.
Of course, there’s Ernest Hemingway’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” which happens to be the title of their 1984 song.
Other books that have inspired Metallica:
Dalton Trumbo’s “Johnny Got His Gun” for the song “One.”
The book of “Exodus” in the Bible for “Creeping Death.”
H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Call of Cthulu” for the band’s songs “The Call of Ktulu” and “The Thing That Should Not Be.”
And then, there is the Christian-Science doctrine followed by the mother of James Hetfield’s mom inspiring songs like “The God That Failed.”
