Man Claims 600-Year-Old Mummy Is His ‘Spiritual Girlfriend’

A Peruvian man who was caught carrying around an ancient mummy claims the dusty corpse is his “spiritual girlfriend.”
Puno police discovered the mummy in 26-year-old Julio Cesar Bermejo’s duffel bag after they stopped him and two friends for being drunk, they say. Bermejo told officers the mummy — who he named Juanita — had been given to him by his father, according to authorities. “At home, she’s in my room, she sleeps with me,” he said. “I take care of her.”
However, experts who analyzed the mummy had some bad news for Bermejo: Juanita was a 45-year-old man who died sometime between 600 and 800 years ago. “It’s not a Juanita, it’s a Juan,” says a specialist with the Peru Ministry of Culture.
