  1. Spiked and studded dog-collars date back to the days of the Ancient Greeks, who would give their sheep-dogs sharp, spiked collars to protect their necks from wolves while they watched over a shepherd’s flock at night.
  2. There have been 12 presidents who were fluent in Latin. That makes it the most common second language for presidents.  Greek is the next-most popular, with eight presidents. But it’s not as prevalent now. The last president to be fluent in another language was FDR, who was fluent in French and German.
  3. The first chocolate bar was made in 1847. Up to that point, chocolate was just a drink.
  4. Polaris, the North Star, isn’t the brightest star in the sky. It’s the 49th brightest.
  5. Veggie burgers were invented at roughly the same time as hamburgers. They both show up in cookbooks from the late 1800s.
